Cranial Helmets / Cranial Remolding Orthoses

Personalized Cranial Care for Your Child

At Phoenix Orthotics & Prosthetics, we understand that every child’s growth and development is unique. Our cranial remolding orthosis program is designed to provide families with compassionate, individualized care in a comfortable clinical setting.

Unlike larger facilities where families may feel rushed or passed from room to room, our approach is personal, attentive, and family-centered. We take the time to evaluate each child carefully, answer questions clearly, and provide honest recommendations based on medical necessity and each child’s specific needs.

What Is a Cranial Remolding Orthosis?

A cranial remolding orthosis, often referred to as a cranial helmet, is a custom-made device used to gently guide skull growth in infants with head shape concerns. These devices are commonly used to help treat conditions such as plagiocephaly, brachycephaly, and scaphocephaly when appropriate.

The helmet does not squeeze or force the head into shape. Instead, it allows room for growth in specific areas while providing gentle contact in others. Over time, this helps guide natural growth toward improved symmetry and shape.

Advanced 3D Scanning and Custom Fabrication

We perform 3D scanning directly in our clinic, allowing us to capture accurate measurements without the need for traditional casting methods. This process is quick, clean, and comfortable for the child.

Each cranial remolding orthosis is then fabricated using advanced CAD/CAM technology and 3D printing through an FDA-regulated lab. This allows for a highly customized fit and detailed evaluation of each child’s cranial shape.

Our detailed CAD/CAM evaluations help us provide families and physicians with a clear understanding of the child’s condition and treatment options.

Honest, Holistic Treatment Recommendations

We believe cranial helmet treatment should be recommended only when it is truly appropriate. We do not place helmets on every patient. Instead, we take a holistically minded and honest approach, evaluating the child’s age, head shape, severity, growth potential, and overall development before making a recommendation.

If helmet therapy is not medically necessary, we will explain that clearly. If treatment is recommended, we will walk families through the process so they feel informed and supported from the beginning.

Physicians and past families have appreciated our honesty, attention to detail, and individualized approach to cranial care.

Follow-Up Care Designed Around Your Child

Some companies require weekly visits for every patient, but we believe follow-up care should be based on each child’s needs, not a one-size-fits-all schedule.

Follow-up frequency is individualized based on factors such as:

Age
Severity of head shape asymmetry
Growth rate
Fit of the orthosis
Progress during treatment
Family schedule and needs

Some children may need closer monitoring, while others may not require weekly visits. Regardless of the schedule, each patient is attended to as much as needed throughout treatment.

Conditions We Commonly Evaluate

We provide evaluation and treatment recommendations for infants with a variety of cranial shape concerns, including:

Plagiocephaly
Flattening on one side of the back of the head, often causing asymmetry of the ears, forehead, or facial features.

Brachycephaly
Flattening across the back of the head, often resulting in a wider or shorter head shape.

Scaphocephaly
A longer and narrower head shape that may require careful evaluation and monitoring.

Combination Head Shapes
Some children may present with more than one type of head shape concern. Our detailed evaluation helps determine the best approach for each child.

What Families Can Expect

From the first evaluation through the final follow-up, our goal is to make the process as clear and stress-free as possible.

During the cranial helmet process, families can expect:

A personalized consultation
A detailed cranial shape evaluation
In-clinic 3D scanning
Honest discussion of treatment options
Custom CAD/CAM-based orthosis design
A careful fitting appointment
Individualized follow-up care
Ongoing support and adjustments as needed

We understand that helmet therapy can feel overwhelming at first. Our team is here to answer questions, explain each step, and help families feel confident in their child’s care.
